Where to Wine Where to Wine DISCOVER CARMEL'S FAIRY-TALE COTTAGES C armel-by-the-Sea is dotted with enchanting fairy-tale style cottages, thanks to the visionary Hugh Comstock. In 1924, he built a whimsical cottage for his wife, Mayotta, as a studio for her doll-making hobby. Despite not being an architect or builder, Comstock created charming homes and shops with steeply pitched roofs, arched doors and windows, rolled eaves, and elfin stone chimneys. Today, twenty-one of Comstock’s original cottages remain, showcasing his signature style. This fairy-tale architecture quickly caught on, and by the late 1920s, nearly thirty storybook-style cottages had sprouted up, adding to Carmel-by-the-Sea’s unique charm.
