the Walker Cup. “They didn’t get any credit for what they had.” When the club opened, property deed restrictions in the Del Monte Forest excluded blacks, members of the Ottoman Empire and other ethnic groups. Because women were excluded from country clubs, founder and developer Marion Hollins—a champion women’s amateur golfer, top polo player against men and, among other accomplishments, a top four-in-hand driver of horse carriages, equestri- enne and suffragette—tailored her membership efforts toward women who would bring their husbands to the table. She had previously founded the Women’s National Golf and Tennis Club on Long Island. Cypress Point members have created a Marion Hollins Terrace between the clubhouse and the 16th hole—in the spirit of the founder and visionary. Now, the club’s work—green superintendent Jeff Markow’s restoration of architect Alister Mackenzie’s camouflage bunkers and short but tricky layout—will be open for all the world to enjoy. 106 C A R M E L M A G A Z I N E • F A L L 2 0 2 5 Photos: USGA (Clockwise from top left) The Walker Cup; gallery members check the scoreboard in 1981, the first time the cup matches were played at Cypress Point; the views of holes 15 and 16 were stunning for spectators in 1981.
