She crafts her own paints, enabling a wide range of personalized hues, and stretches her own canvases. Before she begins to paint, she creates a sort of template.“I scan imagery from various sources and create a collage in Photoshop,” she says. That becomes the basis for the works she calls “landscape shaped by absence—a space where elements have been erased or have faded away, also fragmented or disrupted realism.” A native of Denmark, Hansen’s original career choice was graphic design, but after graduating she became more interested in painting. “I’m self-taught, so I did a lot of trial and error,” she says. “And after a bit of error, I started to deeply study the Old Masters, with an emphasis on Rembrandt.” “Feeling there were more opportunities for me, I moved to San Francisco in 2003,” she says. Immediately applying at galleries, she was for- tunate enough to be taken on quickly. Today she is a member of the Carmel Art Association and is represented by Jack Fischer Gallery, San Francisco, and Georges Bergés Gallery, NYC. She will be in a group show at Carmel Modern, starting October 13. For more information, visit www.reinerhansen.com . ART I ST PROF I L E Kirstine Reiner Hansen Photo: Kelli Uldall
