Friends and the community wish Elizabeth Martin a very happy birthday. A resident of the peninsula since 1950, Martin is celebrating her 105th birthday this October. SHORT CUTS NEIGHBORS E lizabeth Martin is a remarkably sharp, engaging and engaged woman. She regu- larly attends musical events, has a busy social calendar and nails the New York Times cross- word every day. Not unusual? Well, on October 2, she will celebrate her 105th birthday. Martin moved to the Monterey Peninsula in 1950, though she had often visited before. “My grandmother Fuilt a house in 4aci½c +rove in 1880. I spent my childhood summers there,” she says. “I loved it and would cry every time I left.” When able to make the decision of where to put down roots, there was no hesitation. “It had to be the Monterey Peninsula.” When asked what’s changed in her time here, she responds by focusing on what hasn’t. “It’s such a beautiful place. When I look out the window, the coastline, mountains and beaches are right there. And of course, the wonderful people here.” She married realtor Jack Martin, who owned Carmel Realty Company for years. The couple had a bucolic home in Palo Colorado Canyon and a rustic villa in France. Martin has had grand adventures in her century-plus lifetime. “One never knows when a wonderful jewel is going to be uncovered,” she says with her boundless optimism.
