SHORT CUTS EVENT A s her infant nephew went through treatments and transplants to fight a rare form of leukemia, Liz Grijalva encountered other families facing their own heartbreaking challenges. After Baby Matthew passed away, Grijalva founded Key for a Cure Foundation to support pediatric cancer research. ±-t’s so difficult to come out of that still stand - ing. Key for a Cure has raised more than $1.3 million in research funding to date, along with money for family grants and local services provided by .acob’s Heart and Coastal Kids Home Care. The tournament at Corral de Tierra Country Club includes course play, golf darts, beat- the-pro events, a silent auction and awards. A separate fundraiser takes place November 7 and 8, when the foundation hosts barrel racing competitions in King City. The community members who give time and money to the all-volunteer foundation remind Grijalva of the impact that’s possible through each simple action. “It’s such a David and Goliath story. There are days where there’s doubt. But I’m just so proud of our community. When you come together, you don’t feel so small,” she says.
