When he moved home to Carmel Valley and decided to open The Barrel Room, he brought that same commitment to quality service and warm hospitality. “I always laugh, because everyone talks about our great patio with beautiful views. But then they come in and they sit down at the bar and it’s like they just get into a comfort zone. They don’t go back outside,” Saunders says. The Carmel Valley Village pub features a handcrafted redwood bar and San Francisco Bay Area sports memorabilia. Saunders pours red wines from his family’s Boëté label, plus releases by select local wineries. He also serves draft and bottled beers, including several from California producers like Alvarado Street Brewery and Discretion Brewing. Patrons are encouraged to bring in food from nearby restaurants. People often share snacks on game days. The typical clientele includes a lively mix of locals, second home- owners who return whenever they’re in town, and travelers drawn in as they explore Carmel Valley. Saunders describes the vibe as “one big family party.” “People talk about how comfortable it is, just sitting here and talking. They’re meeting new people.
