at one time operated five shops scattered throughout Monterey County. “We consolidated to one store in Carmel in 2007,” says Beth Brookhouser, vice presi- dent of marketing and communications for the organ- ization. “What sets us apart are the variety of items and how quickly they sell. Shoppers are always going to find something new here.” The store raises hundreds of thousands of dollars every year for SPCA Monterey County. “All the funds go into our general operating fund, so they’re used wherever needed, from dog and cat adoptions to injured wildlife and farm ani- mals. We also help fund a low cost spay and neuter program.” New donations arrive daily. “The thrill of the hunt and the excite- ment that you’re always going to see something new brings people back,” Brookhouser adds. “We are blessed to have dozens of volun- teers, some of whom have been here for more than 20 years. We are open seven days a week and we couldn’t operate without them.” Not surprisingly this shop maintains a section especially for pet and animal related items. Customers can find cat litter boxes, travel carriers for dogs and cats, pet food and toys. But Brookhouser says, “I feel like we’re most well known for jewelry. We hold three-day events just before Mother’s Day and another in November. People line up at the door waiting for us to open. We do sell jewelry throughout the year, but these are special items.” As does YBR, the SPCA shop offers 50 percent off the entire store on the last full weekend of the month.
