Working Dogs BY MICHAEL CHATFIELD PHOTOGRAPHY BY KELLI ULDALL 96 C A R M E L M A G A Z I N E • S P R I N G 2 0 2 4 Maisy D illon, Montana, is among the top U.S. fly fishing destinations. So, it’s only fitting that Geoff Malloway, owner of Central Coast Fly Fishing in Carmel’s Barnyard Shopping Village, adopted Maisy from that area. A fishing buddy told Malloway that this energetic, three-and-a-half- year-old fox hound was looking for a forever home. And what better place for a Montana pup than a shop piled floor to ceiling with fly fishing gear? etta james S usie Bauer is the owner of Mopane, a gallery in the Crossroads Carmel. Half of her shop’s proceeds benefit Elephant Havens Orphanage in Botswana, Africa. How appropriate, then, that Etta, as she’s known, is a basenji, a breed known as the “barkless dog,” from Congo. “They are the oldest known domesticated breed of dogs,” Bauer says. Though indeed, Etta doesn’t bark, she enthusiastically greets customers from behind the sales desk with an energetic wag of her cute little tail. “If your dog is fat, you’re not getting enough exercise.” ~ unknown
