Working Dogs BY MICHAEL CHATFIELD PHOTOGRAPHY BY KELLI ULDALL 96 C A R M E L M A G A Z I N E • S P R I N G 2 0 2 6 Hudson T his adorable 3-year-old miniature poodle has the cat bird seat during the Crossroads’ annual Poodle Day. Beachwood Home shop owner Philip Studer says, “He’s my co- worker…no, he’s actually the supervisor.” Hudson keeps watch over the store, greets people and remembers other pooches from previous visits. “He’s also a clothes horse. He loves to get dressed up, especial- ly during Poodle Day.” But as a faithful and conscientious employee, he opts out of com- peting in the festival’s parade. Candy & Suga C andy and Shuga, both husky mixes, work with Alyssa Ivery at her Beautification by Alyssa studio in Monterey. “Candy is 6-years-old and Shuga is still a puppy at 1-year- old,” Ivery says. Both are in Ivery’s Monterey salon every day. “Candy is especially well behaved. Shuga is still learning the ropes though.” Since they’re huskies, they tend to shed a lot, but that’s no problem in a hair salon. “Since I’m sweeping up hair all day anyway, in a way, they help keep the shop clean.” “I don’t trust people who don’t like dogs, but I do trust dogs when they don’t like people.” —Bill Murray
