Many know her for her beautifully rendered table- ware, but lately she has expanded her repertoire into more decorative pieces. “I’ve been doing some larger wall art, up to six by four feet,” she says. “These are sculptures that people can enjoy in their homes as state- ment pieces.” These, along with her other colorful, unique and fun pieces can be seen at the Hawthorne Gallery in Big Sur. Hawthorne works in her newly expanded and remodeled Sand City studio, in a building she shares with her brother, metal fabricator Taylor. “Our business name is Hawthorne Glass and Metal,” she says. Recently, Hawthorne was commissioned to produce a large-scale outdoor glass sculpture, a piece for whichTaylor is crafting the stainless steel frames that will support the sculpture. Hawthorne will display her work at the West End Celebration on August 24 and 25. This positive and buoyant artist is always honing her skills and searching for new ways to express herself. “But the plateware is something I think I’ll always do,” she says. “I want my work to be accessible to everyone.” Visit www.shelbyhawthorne.com or www.hawthornegallery.com for more information about Shleby Hawthorne. — Michael Chatfield ART I ST PROF I L E Shelby Hawthorne Photo: Kelli Uldall
