Galler y MAR Carmel Expands with a Second Downtown Location B Y B R E T T WI L BUR W ith an impressive collection of muse- um quality, contemporary art, Gallery MAR Carmel co-owner Thomas Cushman decided to open a second Carmel space on Dolores Street this year. “We think of it as one gallery in two loca- tions,” Cushman says. Cushman, a former Olympic speed skater and national and world team coach, decided he wanted to sell art when he retired from skating and worked as a gallery director in Park City for seven years. In 2019, he teamed up with Gallery MAR Park City owner Maren Mullin to bring Gallery MAR to Carmel. “I have just been astonished by how friendly, welcoming and helpful the people of Carmel have been,” he says. “Other gallery owners have been wonderful.” “I am not so concerned about the genre or medium,” Cushman explains. “I want contem- porary, museum quality, authentic artwork.” ;hile there is an eclectic flavor to the gallery, the overall effect is cohesive and fasci- nating to explore. “It is really fun to have different styles of work play off each other,” Cushman says. “It’s amazing what connects.” Gallery MAR North is on Dolores Street between 5th and 6th and Gallery MAR South is on Dolores between Ocean and 7th in Carmel.
