An incredible exhibition of internationally acclaimed local artist David Ligare’s work is on display at the Monterey Museum of Art now through September 1. A cclaimed Carmel Valley artist David Ligare incorporates sea, sky, stone and fire into “Magna *ide The +reat Belief ,” a painting that honors the work of 6enaissance artist 0eon Battista %lberti. The Monterey Museum of %rt MM% acUuired the painting in , with the help of museum supporters, but the pandemic canceled a planned e\hibit. This summer, “Magna *ide” finally makes its Monterey debut. It anchors “(avid 0igare Spheres of Influence,” a solo e\hibition orga - nized in collaboration with 0igare and 'armel’s ;infield +allery. The show draws on over four decades of creative work, including more than paintings, drawings and smaller-scale studies. “This is a good opportunity for people to get a sense of the breadth of (avid’s work,” says MM% 'ollections and )\hibitions (irector .ohn 6e\ine. ,e notes additional highlights such as “Tomb of %rchimedes,” a oil on canvas featuring a striking sunset image, and other pieces that capture seascapes, trees, Mediterranean scenes and architectural elegance. %ncient philosophy, literature and mythology inform 0igare’s work. ,is paintings are also influenced by place. “,is work includes the sea and land - scapes and the light of the sky, which is very 'alifornia,” 6e\ine says. “David Ligare: Spheres of Influence” is on display at the Monterey Museum of Art through September 1.
