Working Dogs BY MICHAEL CHATFIELD PHOTOGRAPHY BY KELLI ULDALL “A dog doesn’t care if you’re rich or poor, educated or illiterate, clever or dull. Give him your heart and he will give you his” ~ Owen Wilson, “Marley and Me” Lily A mber Kramer of Carmel’s Amber Moon says that 2-year-old Lily is “Carmel’s favorite French bulldog.” “She’s been hanging out here every day since she was a puppy,” Kramer says. “Actually, this is Lily’s store. People come by specifically to see her and incidentally end up buying things.” Even neighboring shop owners take time from their busy days to stop by to spend time with this gregarious pup. Birkin B ernardus Winery makes one of Monterey County’s finest Sauvignon Blancs, a fact that is not lost on this 5-year-old cavapoo. “Birkin loves that wine,” says Director of Sales and Marketing Rob Baker. Until Baker’s retirement, “Berkie” (for short) loved spend- ing her days at the Carmel Valley winery when his human wasn’t traveling. “When she hears the word ‘office’ she gets all jazzy. I might as well have said ‘hamburger.’” 94 C A R M E L M A G A Z I N E • S U M M E R 2 0 2 5
