It’s a stellar example of the art of automotive restoration practiced at Henningsen Machine Shop. Photo: Scott Henningsen This business is a veritable time machine where old vehicles enter one door in less than immaculate shape and roll out appearing and functioning as they did on their original dealer’s showroom floor. On a recent visit—less than five months before the 2026 Concours d’Elegance—the team is working on the “frame off” restoration of a 1910 Glide Model 45, manufactured by the Bartholomew Company in Peoria Heights, Illinois. Frame off means that a car is completely disas- sembled down to the last nut. In this state of the project, there is no way for a casual observer to determine what make or model the vehicle could be. The wooden-spoke wheels are on a bench being refurbished. Body panels sit on stands nearby, fresh from the paint department. The engine block rests on the car’s frame. In another area, a machinist is fabricating new pis- tons from solid metal, working from precise measurements taken from the originals. The seats and fabric top are being recreated by an artisan in another part of the shop. This team is a well- oiled machine, with each individual focusing on specific parts, using increasingly rare methods to recreate an automobile more than a century old. The end product will take its rightful place along- side automotive royalty at Pebble Beach on Sunday, August 16, 2026. If the original owner who purchased the Model 45 from his local Glide dealer 116 years ago could see it now, he would absolutely swear it was the same car. Bringing what was someone’s dream car a century ago back to new life is a labor of love for Scott Henningsen and his team. They’re each at the top of their games, and the work they do is clear evidence of that. It’s refreshing to see artisans put this level of passion into their chosen trades.
