Mar ine Themed Book Encourages Children to “Dream Deeply” B Y B R E T T WI L BUR A stunning new children’s book by first time local author Ashley Blacow- Draeger invites families to spend time togeth- er exploring a magical underwater landscape of charming sea creatures. “Dream Deeply” resonates in part due to its authenticity— Blacow-Draeger, a full-time aquatic biologist and conservationist, leaned on her background when creating the book. “I’ve wanted to write a children’s book for more than a decade,” she says. “When my son was two years old, the idea for “Dream Deeply” came to me, and I knew it was something spe- cial. I worked closely with the illustrator because I had a specific vision in mind and working on the book became a place of tranquility because of my connection to it as a mom.” Ensuring scientific accuracy of the drawings, color palette and species that were paired with specific storylines was a priority, while the “deep facts” section of the story shares fascinating information about marine creatures. The reception to the book—which aims to inspire ocean conservation—has been over- whelmingly positive. “I am so happy that everything I put into it strategically and with love resulted in a success- ful way for readers to connect with the book,” Blacow-Draeger says.
