Working Dogs BY MICHAEL CHATFIELD PHOTOGRAPHY BY KELLI ULDALL 86 C A R M E L M A G A Z I N E • F A L L 2 0 2 2 Sookie A former service dog, this six-year-old Golden Retriever is extremely well mannered and polite. “She’s a people per- son,” says Sookie’s human, Marissa Ley, administrative assistant at Vanderbilt CPA in Carmel. “She greets clients when they come in the office, but she’s trained to wait for permission to say hello.” Sookie loves working with Marissa, but truth be told, she would much prefer being at the beach. Then again, who wouldn’t? Snow White A t nine, Snow White has been working in retail with her owner Diane Cutino Simkins most of her life, currently at Tops ‘n Travel in the Crossroads Carmel. “She’s a good working dog,” Diane says. Ironically for a pup that works in a shop specializing in travel products, “She’s not a traveling dog and won’t leave the store.” An excellent salespup, Snow White comes running when she hears a customer enter and stays with them for their entire visit. “If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and man.” ~ Mark Twain
