A Tail From the Heart Pets Explore Carmel -by-the-Sea in a Charming Chi ldren’s Book B Y B R E T T WI L BUR W hen Carmel native Kirsten Tarman decided to write a children’s book set in town and centered around local pets, especially dogs, she didn’t quite have an idea how in depth the project would turn out to be. The result, “Olly and Lucille’s Adventure in Carmel- by-the-Sea,” is a charming and visually engaging tale that lovingly depicts Carmel landmarks through a fun adventure based on real animals. “I wanted to make sure all of the places we depicted were in downtown Carmel, so it could be walking distance for the animals in the story and for children who might like to recreate their path,” Tarman shares. She also collaborated with local fine artist Delia Bradford, by combining one of her paintings with characters from the story, including Delia’s rabbits. Tarman went to great lengths to make sure she portrayed local landmarks accurately, working with all the book’s sponsors who are featured in the tale to make sure they were happy with and proud of the results. 152 C A R M E L M A G A Z I N E • F A L L 2 0 2 3 A new children’s book by Kirsten Tarman follows dogs on an adventure with other animals through downtown Carmel.
