Architect Frank Wynkoop’s Butterfly House, is a midcentury masterpiece. Built in 1951, it is one of the most recognizable and iconic homes in Carmel-by-the-Sea. T he sale of the iconic Butterfly House—a true midcentury masterpiece—on Scenic Road in Carmel, set a landmark for Monterey Peninsula real estate this July with a sale price of $29 million, the highest ever recorded in Carmel proper. The property is well known for its exquisite site—perched on a rocky oceanfront outcropping at Carmel Point—and its exceptional design, with its extremely recognizable “butterfly” or winged roof shape design. Notably, the home was featured in “Architectural Digest at 100: A Century of Style.” Architect Frank Wynkoop designed the home for himself and his fam - ily in 1951, and received critical acclaim for the design as soon as it was completed. Despite his renown as a residential architect, Wynkoop was best known for his work as a school planning specialist—he served on the Educational Advisory Boards for both Australia and Great Britain and, locally, he designed Pacific Grove High School. Shelly Mitchell Lynch of Carmel Realty Company was proud to represent the sellers, Kevin and Hannah Comolli, in the landmark sale. The home has changed hands many times over the last three-quarters of a century, but the current sellers are responsible for usher - ing the home into a new era through their thoughtful renovations that both pay respect to the original design and include updates for contemporary living.
