Fall 2023
“Grandmother Comes to Call” is a multi-image photograph from Lovell’s “Magic and Mystery in Latin America” series, taken in Mexico at the Hacienda del Jaral de Berrio. C armel Valley photographer Craig Lovell built a business on commercial and edito- rial work, but he’s also passionate about travel. His fine art images capture the culture, archi - tecture and people of places like Tibet, Nepal, Bali and beyond. Lovell’s latest series, “Magic and Mystery in Latin America,” is an engaging collection that includes multi-image photographs taken in Mexico, Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands and elsewhere. “What’s really interesting is how the indige- nous cultures meld with Catholic and Spanish cultures to create modern Mexico, and those tensions and similarities,” he says. Lovell especially enjoys documenting remote communities and lifestyles lost in an ever-mod- ernizing world. “Native cultures are changing very rapidly, and, if not disappearing, transitioning into some- thing else. Some of the value of my work is historical, at this point,” he says. Upcoming Craig Lovell exhibits include “Journey to the Mystic East” (at the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Monterey Peninsula through September 25) and “Magic and Mystery in Latin America” (at the Sunset Center’s Marjorie Evans Gallery through October 30, with an artist reception on September 22. Lovell will also participate in Arts Habitat’s 2023 Monterey County Artists Studio Tour (September 30-October 1, and October 7-8). His Carmel Valley studio is open by appointment.
