Spring-2023

Tara Westover will discuss her bestselling 2018 memoir, “Educated,” at the Sunset Center on April 18th for the Carmel Public Library Foundation’s 11th fundraiser. SHORT CUTS EVENT C armel Library Foundation’s 11th fund- raising public event presents author Tara Westover, whose 2018 memoir, “Educated” debuted as a #1 New York Times bestseller. The hardcover edition remained on that list for two years. Westover’s book has garnered praise from such luminaries as Barack Obama, who called it “remarkable,” and Bill Gates, who termed it one of his favorite books of the year and said, “It’s even better than you’ve heard.” “We’ve titled this event ‘The Education Edition,’” says Foundation Executive Director Alexandra Fallon. “Educated” details Westover’s struggle balancing her desire for education while remaining loyal to her family’s beliefs. Her father was opposed to public education. As a result, Westover began her schooling at 17. She made up for lost time, graduating magna cum laude from Brigham Young University, garnering a Gates Cambridge Scholarship, earning a Master of Philosphy and later, a doctorate in history. “Her journey is fascinating,” Fallon says, “com- ing from a fanatical Mormon family to writing a book that sold eight million copies.” The program will be presented Tuesday, April 18th at 7:00 pm at the Sunset Center and will be moderated by author Alexis Madrigal, a contributing writer at The Atlantic and co-host of KQED’s “Forum.” For more information, visit www.sunsetcenter.org or www.carmelpubliclibraryfoundation.org .
