Spring-2023

Motorcycle enthusiasts from all over the world are drawn to the The Quail Motorcycle Gathering. This year, the event will honor Don Wayne “Bubba” Shobert. W hen Gordon McCall was 14 years old, he took a bus from his Carmel home (without his mother’s knowledge) and showed up in Monterey with cash from selling his 10-speed bicycle to purchase a motorcycle he saw advertised in the Monterey Herald. “It took me two hours to figure out how to ride it, then I took it on back roads to hide it at a friend’s house,” McCall shares. The longtime host of automotive, airplane and motorcycle events is excited for The Quail Motorcycle Gathering which, this year, honors Bubba Shobert, a three-time Grand National Champion, and will raise funds for pediatric cancer. The event features traditional motorcycle classes, along with three special ones. “Italian and Single,” are one-cylinder bikes “like little pieces of jewelry,” built in the 1950s and 1960s. Then there are the “1970s Vintage Muscle” which McCall says, “have gobs of horsepower but not the best chassis or brakes.” Finally, are the “Bring on the Baggers,” so named for the luggage carried on the back of huge Indian or Harley-Davidson motorcycles. “The motorcycle industry is experiencing a renaissance among long-time riders,” says Craig Barkdull, Quail Lodge & Golf Club’s director of sales and marketing. “This year’s gathering will strive to be another celebration of a beloved pastime and its passionate community.” The Quail Motorcycle Gathering takes place Saturday, May 6th, at Quail Lodge & Golf Club.
