148 C A R M E L M A G A Z I N E • S U M M E R 2 0 2 3 In the Driver’s Seat Building Thr iving Businesses on an Affinity for Car s and Collectibles B Y R ENE E B R I NCK S A utomobile enthusiast Everett Anton “Tony” Singer first explored the Monterey Peninsula as a University of Denver art student on a road trip.Years later, while living back in his home state of NewYork, he started traveling to vintage racing events at Laguna Seca, today’s WeatherTech Raceway. “Mostly, I was coming to see the vendors. The track would open at 8 o’clock on aThursday morning, and I was there as soon as they opened the gates,” he says. Singer often chatted with vendors about his expanding collec- tion of car posters and memorabilia. Those conversations inspired his own business, Spyder Enterprises. Under that umbrel- la, Singer launched an e-commerce business called Vintage Auto Posters in the mid 1990s. After moving to Carmel Valley in 2002, he also established Automobilia Monterey. The annual August event offers posters, photos, pins, postcards, models, books and other car-themed collectibles.
