One of the West Coast’s most important portrait photographers for nearly half a century, Martha Casanave continues to captivate viewers with her exceptional work. Photo: Kelli Uldall SHORT CUTS ART T he work of renowned photographer Martha Casanave is being celebrated with two shows on the Monterey Peninsula—“Fictions,” a selection of her narrative photography, at the Center for Photographic Art in Carmel (CfPA), and “Explorations,” at the Monterey Museum of Art (MMA), featuring her pinhole photog- raphy. Casanave’s photographs will also be on display at the Fresno Art Museum from July 29, 2023-January 7, 2024, in “Imaginings: Portraits & False Flags,” where she is being honored as the 34th recipient of the museum’s Council of 100’s Distinguished Woman Artist Award. Casanave is well known for her evocative portraits and was recognized for her exceptional work early in her career, winning the Imogen Cunningham Photography Award in 1979. She has continued to garner acclaim ever since, and her work is included in important museums and private collections throughout the U.S. and abroad. After graduation, her life drew her away, but the pull of the peninsula contin- ually brought her back. She has lived and worked here ever since, photographing, writing and instructing, and her work has been the subject of four captivating books. “Explorations” runs from May 4-August 20 at MMA. “Fictions” runs from May 20-July 9 at CfPA.
