The Hay Offers Golf for All Levels Tiger Woods ’ Revamped Cour se i s a Hi t at Pebble Beach B Y B R E T T WI L BUR I n 2021, The Hay opened at Pebble Beach, replacing the former short golf course known as the Peter Hay. “It’s been a tremendous success,” says John Sawin, vice president and director of golf at Pebble Beach Company and general chairman of the 2023 U.S. Women’s Open. “It’s on a beautiful 8-acre parcel sitting between the golf academy and the Pebble Beach pro shop. It was a 9- hole, par-3 course designed by Peter Hay back in 1957. He was a true visionary in creating that short course. There weren’t many short courses around back then. Now it’s all the rage.” The biggest issue with the former course was that it served another purpose besides golf, hosting Pebble Beach Company special events, like the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am tournament each February and the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance every August. Every 5-10 years, the golf course was also used for the U.S. Open Championship, requiring the course to be closed and leveled to support 75,000 square feet of tents. 118 C A R M E L M A G A Z I N E • W I N T E R 2 0 2 2 Photo: JD Cuban
