Achen adds, “Beyond viewing and commenting, the meetings provide an exchange of ideas, and we discuss works in progress and share tech- niques or approaches to our work.” “ImageMakers is mainly focused on artistic development, though we do have workshops on new techniques and technology,” Achen says. Photo shoot excursions are also organized, including a recent night outing at the Point Sur Lighthouse. Taylor believes that photographers are a breed apart from other artists, such as painters. “Photography as a medium requires us to go out and about, get out of our studios and interact with the world and other peo- ple,” he avers.“Painters tend to work alone in a studio for hours on end— except for plein air painters. At an ImageMakers meeting, it’s not unusual to find a group of 30-40 people ready to share their tips and techniques with each other. It would be odd to see a group of painters in the same situation.” “The meetings of ImageMakers not only enable us to be better at our art,” Taylor says. “But they benefit the Monterey Peninsula community as well. We carry on a very strong, world-famous west coast photography tradition. Monterey and Carmel are the birthplaces of the West Coast photography movement as founded by Ansel Adams and EdwardWeston. And that’s something to brag about. We are all nurtured by a common belief that fine art photography matters.” The images on these pages were created by members of ImageMakers.
