Steakley holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in jewelry design and metal- smithing and found early success in that field. His holloware creations (metal tableware) are in the collections of the Smithsonian and other museums. He wrote a definitive book on the subject,“Holloware Techniques.” Having attended a Big Sur Joan Baez concert, he decided the peninsula was where he wanted to be and moved to Carmel Valley with his wife Jackie in 1974.The couple operated Concepts Gallery until 2006. Fortuitously, Steakley packed a Nikon on a journey to Africa years ago and “I came back a photographer.” Today, his iconic images of Monterey Peninsula locations grace homes around the world. Several books of his work have been published, beginning with “Pacific Light.” “That’s the one that put me on the map,” the photographer says. Doug’s most recent book is “Big Sur Revealed.” He’s received the Sierra Club’s prestigious Ansel Adams Award for his conservation photography. Today, Steakley leads international photography tours “mostly retired people taken up photography as a serious hobby”—on shoots all over the globe, including Africa, Mexico, Myanmar, Mongolia, Nepal, Iceland and Cuba.
