(1864-1949) T his dramatic painting depicts the majestic “Wildcat Cove” located in the Carmel Highlands, one cove south of the D.L. James residence, and just north of Ritschel’s own unique stone castle-like studio-home he called “Castel a Mare”. One of America’s foremost marine painters, Ritschel himself declared “Pt. Lobos – Bit of California Coast” to be his finest treatment of half-tones, the tonalist gray values Ritschel so skillfully rendered. Considered one of Ritschel’s true masterworks, this painting will be on view at the upcoming exhibition held at the Monterey Museum of Art, January 19 – April 30, 2023 - Monterey Collects California - presents a never-before- seen survey of pre-1945 California Art drawn from over twenty private collections in and around the Monterey area.
