THROUGH THE LENS T E XT AND PHOTOGRA PHY B Y AARON CHANG Big Sur Milky Way his is my newest release,“Big Sur MilkyWay.” I’m very excited about it because I believe it’s a fresh perspective on the scope, splendor and majesty of the Big Sur coastline. I’ve been fascinated recently with photographing the Milky Way and have been practicing in quite a few locations with the intent of taking this new knowledge to the coast of Big Sur. I couldn’t think of a more interest- ing way to show it than under the equally impressive Milky Way. A client owns a Carmel Point home that features some of the best views of the Big Sur coast. It’s the perfect vantage point for the rising of the Milky Way early in the season. I went there during a new moon, the darkest night of the month. Conditions were good. Just as I began, a squid boat turned up, turned on its bright lights and blasted me out of my image. It was comic in a way, but eventually the boat moved and aimed its lights into the water. That underwater light traveled ten miles down the coast and lit up the shoreline. So, what I thought was a lost shot turned into a much more spectacular photo than I could have planned on.
